For many young people, the idea of changing their body to more fully represent their internal sense of self is a critical part of achieving gender congruence. Frequently, their assumption is that modifying their bodies will address any and all aspects of dysphoria they may be experiencing; when this does not end up being the case, it can be devastating. For the adults in their lives, the prospect of pursuing gender congruence through an affirming surgical procedure can be fraught with uncertainty and fear.
